Board of Directors

The Whittier Alliance Board of Directors is made up of 15 members elected "at large" by the eligible voting membership of the Whittier neighborhood. Five (5) board members are elected each year for a term of three (3) years. The officers of the Board are the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. The NRP stipulates that over 61% of all Board members must be residents of the neighborhood.

The Board of Directors meets monthly to discuss and vote on the motions forwarded from the various committees, review Whittier Alliance finances, and discuss strategic planning and other issues relevant to the neighborhood and the organization. Once a motion is passed by the Board of Directors, it becomes the official position of the Whittier Alliance. Everyone is welcome to these meetings, but only Board members are allowed to speak, unless someone is invited to do so by the Board. The monthly meeting is usually held the fourth Thursday of every month; check the calendar for updates and more information.

Joining the Board

There are four ways one may become a member of the Whittier Alliance Board of Directors:
  • Election: At the Whittier Alliance Annual Meeting, usually held in April, elections are held for all open Board seats. Terms are three years. These are "at large" seats.
  • Committee Chair: The Chair persons from the Acting Committees established at the Annual Meeting are automatically members of the Board of Directors. Committee chair elections are held annually.
  • Appointment: If an elected Board member resigns before their term is up, the Board may vote to appoint an interested party to the Board, who will then fill out the remainder of the three-year term.
  • Business Association: Besides the Business Association Chair, the Business Association votes to appoint four other members to the Board: two from non-profit agencies, and two from for-profit businesses.
The 2010 Annual Meeting will be on Thursday, April 8th. There are open seats on the board and we hope community members will take this opportunity to get involved.
