Erika Boelk Tapia
Candidate for Resident Seat, 2021 - 2024
Why are you interested in serving on the WA Board of Directors?
I want to help the Latino community that is part of Whittier neighborhood. If everyone is included we will have a strong community.
What experiences, talents, or perspectives do you possess that you feel would be an asset to the Whittier Alliance?
I have been living in Whittier for the past 20 years. I have seen all the changes and have made relationships with my neighbors. I’m part of Danza group that empowers Latino family and youth to take leadership roles in our community.
Describe any experiences you’ve had in serving the neighborhood and/or larger community. (Volunteer positions, committees, organizations, businesses, etc.)
I have helped Whittier Alliance on many occasions. I have a relationship with Kaley, I have helped figure out ways to better include Spanish-speaking families in Whittier events and involvement with the neighborhood.
Within a world riddled with injustices and disparities, the above is a big undertaking. As an organization, the Whittier Alliance is trying, failing, progressing, learning and growing in these pursuits of equity and inclusion. However big or small, how would you support these efforts as a board member?
As a teacher who works for a diverse Minneapolis school, I have relationships with the different groups mentioned above. I’m always learning and finding ways to include everyone, and as a Latina women I also face and understand some of the struggles.
