Stephanie Brown (Calvary Church)
Candidate for Nonprofit Seat, 2021 - 2022
Why are you interested in serving on the WA Board of Directors?
I believe in the power and potential of community. Whittier is such an amazing, vibrant, and diverse community, and through Whittier Alliance and Calvary Church, I want to continue investing in the place I call home and welcoming in others.
What experiences, talents, or perspectives do you possess that you feel would be an asset to the Whittier Alliance?
I'm a strategic thinker and good at pulling people together to see something through. As an urban planner, I am familiar with city policies, processes, and politics and how we can organize for more equitable, sustainable outcomes for Whittier.
Describe any experiences you’ve had in serving the neighborhood and/or larger community. (Volunteer positions, committees, organizations, businesses, etc.)
Chaired Whittier Housing Issues for 3 years. Served on the Board of Calvary Church for 4 years. Serve on WLLS committee for Lake Street Council. ED of ULI MIN, dedicated to the responsible use of land to create and sustain thriving communities.
Within a world riddled with injustices and disparities, the above is a big undertaking. As an organization, the Whittier Alliance is trying, failing, progressing, learning and growing in these pursuits of equity and inclusion. However big or small, how would you support these efforts as a board member?
On a personal level, I commit to actively engaging with neighbors who are unknown and unfamiliar to me and always seeking to broaden my own understanding. Structurally, I support reviewing our budget and practices with an anti-racist lens.
