Sydney Burroughs (MCAD)
Candidate for Nonprofit Seat, 2021 - 2022
Why are you interested in serving on the WA Board of Directors?
I absolutely love the Whittier neighborhood. I am very passionate about investing in my local community, and I want to contribute to the effective and efficient efforts the WA is making to create a diverse and equitable neighborhood.
What experiences, talents, or perspectives do you possess that you feel would be an asset to the Whittier Alliance?
I believe that my work/volunteer background in event planning, marketing & communications, and primarily accounting & finance would be an asset to the WA.
Describe any experiences you’ve had in serving the neighborhood and/or larger community. (Volunteer positions, committees, organizations, businesses, etc.)
I have volunteered with the WA to promote marketing and communication efforts. I work full time in the accounting department at MCAD, and I also have a part time job at a local CPA firm, Romer & Company.
Within a world riddled with injustices and disparities, the above is a big undertaking. As an organization, the Whittier Alliance is trying, failing, progressing, learning and growing in these pursuits of equity and inclusion. However big or small, how would you support these efforts as a board member?
Creating an inclusive and equitable environment starts with each individual. I feel personal responsibility to stay educated on topics of social justice. I would hold peers accountable as well as recommend professional external trainings.
