Statement on 2116 Nicollet Ave Lot Purchase
April 2021
Dear Whittier Community,
It is with great excitement that we announce a major investment the Whittier Alliance has made in the future of our neighborhood. Following numerous meetings and hours of careful deliberation, our offer was accepted on February 3rd, 2021 to purchase a vacant lot at 2116 Nicollet Ave; the purchase was finalized on March 31st, 2021.
Acquiring the last vacant lot on Whittier’s stretch of this important commercial corridor enables us to take the next steps in realizing neighborhood goals. Inspired by a long-time intention of the Whittier Alliance to purchase and develop property in the neighborhood for community benefit, the Board made this decision guided by our community-approved strategic plan:
The purchase of 2116 Nicollet Avenue is an opportunity for an inclusive, community-led, innovative real estate development which could have a resounding impact on the neighborhood for years to come. We hope to meet real community needs in creative ways, leading as an example of what is possible in the built environment.
We acknowledge our neighborhood and this property are on the stolen ancestral lands of the Dakota people and recognize the resiliency of our Indigenous, Black and other marginalized community members amid centuries of ongoing, state-sanctioned violence and oppression. We are committed to implementing a robust community engagement plan, which will operate with an anti-racist, anti-oppression and equity framework, prioritizing the voices of historically underrepresented people, populations, and communities.
This is only the beginning of a long journey ahead. Keep an eye on this webpage, your mailboxes (email and physical), meeting agendas, and our social media channels for more information and ways to contribute your ideas over the coming months and years. Tell us how you'd like to stay involved throughout by completing the interest form below.
Sincerely,
The Whittier Alliance Board of Directors
